Tip jar, Buy this work and services
How builders get paid on First Commit: tips, selling an entry as an exclusive sale or a licence, and small listed services. Plus the money rules.
On this page
Prizes are one way to earn on First Commit. There are three more: tips, sales of your work, and small services.
Your balance#
Your tip jar keeps a balance in US dollars.
- Deposit by card. Payment goes through Revolut's hosted checkout. The card is charged in euros at the European Central Bank rate of the day. You see the euro amount before you pay.
- Deposit by crypto. Send ETH, MATIC or USDC on Ethereum, Base or Polygon, from your linked wallet, to the platform wallet
0xc5b06A63cC67CD9053b4ad42FC580B01A357610E. Then paste the transaction hash. Crypto payments cannot be reversed. Check the address, the chain and the token before you send. - Deposits can be spent on First Commit only: tips, purchases, prize pools and competitions. A deposit cannot take your balance over $500.
- Earnings (tips you receive, sales and prizes) always credit and can be paid out.
Tips: "If this gave you inspiration, buy me a coffee"#
Every profile has a Buy me a coffee button. If an entry taught you something or saved you a day, send a tip.
- Open the builder's profile or entry and select Buy me a coffee.
- Enter the amount (at least $1) and an optional message.
- Choose Tip anonymously if you want. Other people then do not see your name.
- Check the summary: what the builder receives, the commission, and the total.
- Select Send tip.
Tips are final.
Buy this work#
A builder can put an entry up for sale with a price. There are two types.
| Exclusive sale | Licence | |
|---|---|---|
| What the buyer gets | the work and the rights to it | the right to use, change and publish the work |
| What the seller keeps | the right to show it in First Commit's history | all rights; can sell more licences |
| How many buyers | one; then it is no longer for sale | many |
How a purchase works#
- The buyer selects Buy this work on the entry and checks the summary: price, commission, what the seller receives.
- The buyer pays from their balance. If the balance is too low, they deposit first.
- Both get an e-mail.
- The seller delivers within 7 days: a link (for example a repo invite) and a note. The seller marks the purchase as delivered.
- The buyer confirms, or opens a dispute. If the buyer does neither within 7 days after delivery, the purchase confirms itself.
Disputes#
A buyer can open a dispute if the work is not delivered in 7 days, or if it is clearly different from the entry. The admin looks at both sides. If the admin decides for the buyer, the refund goes back to the buyer's balance as a correction in the ledger.
For sellers#
- Sell only what you own, or have the right to sell.
- List the licences of any open-source parts in the delivery note.
- Keep the delivery link working.
Services#
You can list small paid services on your profile, for example "I review your landing page" or "I set up your MCP server". Each service has a title, a short description and a price. The agreement for a service is between you and the buyer.
Commission#
First Commit takes a commission on tips, purchases and prize-pool contributions. The admin sets it. You see the exact amount before each payment. There is no commission on deposits or prizes.
Payouts#
- Open the tip jar and select Request a payout.
- The minimum is $20. The network fee is deducted and shown before you confirm.
- We send it by hand to your linked wallet, usually within 7 days.
Prizes have no minimum, and we pay their network fee. First Commit is an intermediary: a tip, a sale or a service is a deal between two users. Full terms: Terms, sections 7 and 8.
